Before making a buying decision you’ll want to know how to judge the right solution for you, but what really makes a good or bad bike store?
Well it depends, but generally here’s the criteria to judge your storage solution on:
This is top of the list for many people, bikes can be very expensive and an easy target for criminals so keeping them safe and secure is vital.
Firstly you’ll want to make sure the physical structure of the solution you’re considering is solid and not easy broken apart, once you’re sure of that then making sure it has a secure locking system is next on the checklist.
It’s always worth considering locking down your bikes within the storage unit itself, but that might be overkill if the solution is already solid.
Although you might take your cycle out in all sorts of weather, once it’s back home you’ll want to make sure that it stays dry when in storage. If you fail to keep it dry then over time rust will develop and weaken the overall strength of the bike. End result, your bike won’t last as long as it should.
So really a waterproof outdoor bike storage solution is a must have on the buying checklist, if it doesn’t look like it will stay waterproof then give it a miss.
Getting ready for a bike ride can be a bit of a logistical battle with a surprisingly large amount of gear when you’re at the serious end of the sport.
So making sure your storage is accessible and frustration free is something often overlooked, that is in fact more important that you will probably realise until you buy the wrong solution.
If you have several bikes you intent to store, think about how easy it is to get to the one you want if it’s at the back, is there some room for a bike pump, so you can make a quick job of pumping tires up?
If you're a cyclist at heart then you'll keep your favorite bikes for a lifetime.
So your storage solution should also match up and protect your bikes for many years to come. The main deciding factor for durability is the material that the storage unit is made of.
Metal is generally always going to win out on durability, but a well looked after wooden or plastic shed can also last for decades if treated well.
Depending on your exact requirements, there are plenty of options available on the market today.
Each option is a balance of Security, Waterproof & Weatherproof, Accessibility, Durability and Budget.
We aim to provide you with enough information so that you can make the best choice possible for your situation.
If you are go camping or RVing and take your bike along with you then a portable bike tent is a must have. Even if you have the room inside your tent or RV you will still find your bikes get in the way.
Storing them safely and securely nearby in a waterproof bike tent is a great option, you’ll need to consider extra security when storing your bike in a portable solution as they are inherently not as solid as a permanent storage solution.
A more permanent storage solution for your bike, perfectly suited for your backyard or garden.
Plastic bike storage solutions are actually our personal favourites as these days they can be extremely secure, very durable and easy to set up. In general they also require less maintenance when compared with a wooden or metal solution.
Plastic solutions are in general more affordable, although if you go too cheap you will likely comprise how secure it is, as cheaper options are often less solid.
Wooden sheds are a great option and are much more aesthetically pleasing.
They will require some maintenance over the years, such as repainting, varnishing or replacing any wood that has gone rotten. But take good care and they can last a lifetime.
Depending on the exact type of wood bike shed you get, you may also need to replace the felt roof every few years, but you can DIY this quite easily and affordability.
Now, subjectively metal bike sheds are always going to be the best overall solution.
They offer the best security, are extremely durable, will nearly alway remain waterproof and require very little maintenance.
They are also nearly as easy to put together as the other options. They may be a little more pricey outright, but when you consider the longevity of a metal bike shed compared to other solutions, they generally come out top for lifetime value.

The YardStash III
Premium standard, all components feel high quality and the fabric is particularly impressive.
Considering it's quality, we think you get value for money after using the YardStash III just a handful of times.
Overall, we can't find many faults with this portable solution.
The YardStash III is sold as a solution for your bikes, garden furniture, garden tools, children's toys or anything else that might need protecting from the elements.
Our favorite thing about the YardStash III is the quality of the fabric, some portable solutions just feel cheap and you know they won't last more than one summer. If you look after your YardStash it's likely to keep your bikes dry for many years to come.
The YardStash III has impressive spare saving abilities; it folds up neatly into a small-ish carry bag so is easy to take on your next camping trip, once you arrive it's no-tool setup means you'll have it ready to store in no time.
The YardStash IV
Going up a step on the previous model, the YardStash IV is certainly heavy duty.
Expect to pay a little more for quality, but as they say - you get what you pay for
If you have the budget, the YardStash IV is the most solid option available
Much like the YardStash II, the YardStash IV is an extremely versatile and portable storage solution, specifically designed to store your bikes.
Snow storm? no problem. What takes the YardStash IV up a notch is the heavy duty quality of the materials, meaning it really handle nearly every weather condition thrown at it. It has even been described by some as the 'near perfect storage solution'.
Nearly everyone who ends up buying the YardStash IV mentions not only it's superb durability, but that they manage to store more than just 2 bikes in it, often finding enough room for a child's bike as well, or some extra garden equipment squeezed in. We can't speak highly enough of the YardStash IV.
Suncast BMS4900D Glidetop Slide Lid Shed
Long lasting with a reinforced floor, generally very sturdy
Probably the plastic shed with the most bang for your buck
Very accessible as the top removes slightly as well as the front doors. One of our favorite choices when it comes to plastic bike storage options
The Glidetop feature of this storage unit gives it advantages over many of it's competitors. How many times have you found yourself wrestling with something in storage, trying to free it from the back, with the Glidetop it makes things much more accessible, so less fighting to get your gear out.
Should be plenty big enough to store 3 adult bikes, or 2 adult bikes + 2 children's bikes, so it's suitable for families or bike enthusiasts who have collected one too many bikes.
There are also plenty of options of little shelves and hooks, so you can store some extra bike equipment right in there with your bikes.
Rubbermaid Outdoor Slide-Lid Storage Shed
Double walled for extra quality and durability
On the pricier side, but very aesthetically pleasing
We absolutely love the look of the Rubbermaid shed, not only that it performs it's function extremely well
If the Suncast doesn't take your fancy for whatever reason then we think the Rubbermaid is a superb alternative, and if you're concerned with how nice the storage unit looks, well we think this is one of the best looking options available.
It's not just pretty thought, it's leak and dent proof and similarly to the Suncast, it has a sliding roof that makes is super accessible.
The Rubbermaid can fit 3 bikes in comfortably and if you need to store anything else, it's extremely flexible internal space means you can store anything from garden equipment to children's toys.
Bosmere WS1881H Rowlinson Wallstore
About what you would expect from a wooden shed structure
Standard price really, given it will last many years
If you're after a basic wooden bike shed, you can't go far wrong
I've actually had one of these myself for many years, and it's never let me down (it even moved from one garden to another intact).
You may have to replace the odd bit of wood here and there over the years, and keeping it freshly painted (or heavy duty varnished) is essential to keep it in good shape year after year.
Also a great general storage unit, it's big enough to keep a fairly hefty BBQ unit in it, as well as a bike and some other gear. Overall it's relatively secure with a lock on the front.
Bosmere Trimetals A303 Bicycle Storage Unit
You can't get much better than this
On the pricey side, but you're paying for quality here
If you're looking for the gold standard of bike storage sheds then you're not far off with the Bosmere A303
Made from galvanized steel, this is one solid bike storage unit that will suit a bike lover with concerns over storage safety and security.
Totally maintenance free (although the odd oil of moving parts wouldn't go a miss) the A303 is fire resistant, and guaranteed against corrosion for 15 years, so when calculating this storage unit in terms of price per lifetime, it's just as affordable as other storage options.
Metal units are generally easier to put together than wooden or plastic options so you can probably get this up and running in under an hour, and get up to 3 bikes stored safely and securely.
